Dr. Hazen Adds…

So what’s the appeal? Bruce and Stan ask a very good question here—one that I believe is not asked often enough about various religious beliefs. After some historical reflection on the circumstances surrounding the origin of New Thought, you may see that it doesn’t seem quite so outlandish that someone would embrace these ideas and practices. For instance, going to Dr. Quimby to be treated for a persistent illness was at least worth a try. The alternative to Quimby was mainstream medicine, which in Quimby’s day was still very primitive by today’s standards. More often than not, traditional doctors just didn’t have effective treatments to offer, and when they did, their treatments were usually far worse than the disease itself. Quimby’s patients reported many cures—especially of “nervous” diseases—and hence this “scientific” demonstration was thought by many to put a stamp of approval on his religious theories as well.
